How does the email checker work?
When you check an email address, Truelist runs it through a multi-layer validation process in real time.
Syntax check
Validates the address follows correct email format (local-part@domain.tld).
Domain check
Confirms the domain exists, has valid DNS records, and can accept email.
Mailbox check
Pings the mail server to verify the specific mailbox exists without sending a message.
Risk analysis
Detects disposable, role-based, and catch-all addresses that increase bounce risk.
What your email check results mean
After you check an email address, you'll see one of these results:
- Safe to send
- The address is correctly formatted, the domain is active, and the mailbox exists. You can send to this address with confidence.
- Do not send
- The address has a syntax error, the domain doesn't exist, or the mailbox has been confirmed as non-existent. Sending will result in a hard bounce.
- Proceed with caution
- The address may be disposable, role-based (info@, support@), or from a domain with poor reputation. Sending is possible but carries elevated risk.
- Unverifiable
- The domain accepts all incoming email regardless of whether the mailbox exists, so we can't confirm delivery. Truelist's layered validation can still classify many catch-all addresses more precisely than standard checkers.

Frequently asked questions
Can't find the answer you're looking for? Reach out to our customer support team.
- Is this email checker really free?
- Yes — completely free, no signup required. Enter any email address and get an instant result.
- How accurate is the email checker?
- Truelist's validation is among the most accurate available. We go beyond basic syntax and DNS checks to perform live mailbox verification, catching invalid addresses that other tools miss. For catch-all domains, we apply additional layered checks to give you a more reliable result.
- What's the difference between checking and verifying an email?
- "Checking" and "verifying" are often used interchangeably. Both involve validating that an email address is real and deliverable. This tool performs full verification — not just a syntax check — by also confirming the domain and mailbox exist.
- Can I check a list of emails in bulk?
- This tool checks one address at a time. To verify an entire email list, upload it directly with a Truelist plan — Growth and above include bulk list verification with no per-credit charges.
- Will you store the email addresses I check?
- No. We do not store or log any email addresses entered into this tool.
- Why does my email show as "catch-all"?
- A catch-all domain accepts all incoming email regardless of whether the specific mailbox exists. This means we can't confirm delivery through a standard mailbox check. Many corporate and university domains are catch-all. Truelist applies additional intelligence to classify catch-all addresses more precisely than a standard checker.
- Does checking an email send anything to that address?
- No. Email verification works by communicating with the mail server using standard protocols — no test emails are ever sent to the address being checked.
